Middle Earth or Indiana – Who Can Even Tell?
Everyone knows that the Lord of the Rings films were shot in New Zealand, but did you know that there’s a special spot in Indiana that could just have easily served as a backdrop for the fantasy epic?
Turkey Run State Park looks like something right out of Middle Earth, specifically Amon Hen (if you’re nerdy enough to know what that is, speak up in the comments!).
Located in west-central Indiana just north of the small town of Marshall, the moss-covered boulders, ravines, and canyons serve as the foundation for lush forests, winding creeks, and cascading falls. The park really plays with your sense of scale: everything from the rock formations to trees feel supersized, lending the place a spectacular air of epicness. In all, there are 11 trails that you can explore, ranging from a short and sweet half mile to a longer, meandering three miles. Some are simple and some are rugged.
